SwitchResX is supposed to do the same trick, but I had no success with it. After reboot, these new HiDPI resolutions will appear in MacOs System Settings, alongside the resolutions you had before. After that, you will see additional options to add custom scaled (HiDPI) resolutions. I don't need it anyway, cause I'm quite happy with 2048x1152 (enough space for my needs, and text is not too small). In BetterDisplay settings, on Display tab, find your external monitor, and check 'Edit the system configuration for this display'. But I didn't find a way to have HiDPI enabled for the native 2560x1440. I have a DELL 1440p monitor and I enabled 2048x1152, 1600x900, etc, resolutions.
SWITCHRESX MAC TRIAL
I don't remember if the trial version has "Edit the system configuration for this display" option.) Once BetterDisplay generated that config for your monitor, you don't need to have BetterDisplay running, unless you want to use other features, like dummies or customize monitor controls. In BetterDisplay settings, on Display tab, find your external monitor, and check "Edit the system configuration for this display". If all you need is HiDPI, BetterDisplay has an option to enable HiDPI resolutions by generating a custom display config for your monitor. I had other kinds of issues with dummies as well. I prefer to arrange my apps on different desktops, and BetterDisplay has issues with that: after sleep all the apps can go to desktop #0. Although dummies are usable for certain scenarios, they did not work well for me.
